Good evening Families,
We are writing to inform you of a situation that occurred on one of our school buses on the afternoon of Friday, August 9.
After students were transported home, Green Township Elementary received a report from a parent of a potential weapon or BB gun in the possession of a student on the bus ride home. The incident was also reported to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, and the item in question was taken into possession Friday afternoon. Also, over the weekend, the MSD of Martinsville Police Department joined the investigation into the alleged incident.
In working with law enforcement professionals at the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and MSD of Martinsville Police Department, we believe that no credible threat to school safety exists. The item in question was in fact a BB gun. The student and their family are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The safety of our students is always our number one priority. It is important for students, staff, and families to follow the “see something, say something” guidelines to promote school safety. We are grateful to the individuals who spoke up and notified the school staff of this situation right away. We also wish to thank the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, MSD of Martinsville Police Department, and Morgan County Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance in the incident.
We also want to remind our families to speak with their students about what is and is not appropriate to bring to school. Weapons, or anything that could be construed to be a weapon such as play guns or knives, are strictly prohibited on school property and school buses.
Please do not hesitate to contact the District if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your attention to this important message.
Sincerely,
Eric Bowlen
Superintendent
